FAAN Plans 25-Day Owerri Airport Runway Closure — Here’s Why

Written by Mary Bassey

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has proposed a temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing works.

The proposed closure is expected to last approximately 25 days, beginning on October 20, 2026, subject to final confirmation by the relevant authorities.

According to FAAN, the planned maintenance became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, with potholes and extensive surface cracks reportedly worsened by recent heavy rainfall.

The rehabilitation project will involve repairing damaged sections of the runway pavement, treating surface cracks and resurfacing affected areas to improve safety and restore the runway to a better operational condition.

The authority said the intervention is particularly important ahead of the Christmas season, when passenger numbers and flight movements to Owerri and other parts of the South-East are expected to increase.

Runway Extension Also Planned

Beyond the immediate repairs, the project will include an extension of the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.

FAAN said the planned expansion is intended to improve the airport’s capacity as air traffic to the region grows, while enhancing passenger comfort and supporting more efficient airport operations.

However, the authority has stated that the proposed closure and reopening dates remain subject to final confirmation.

What Travellers Need to Know

FAAN has advised passengers planning to travel through Owerri during the proposed closure period to maintain contact with their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.

The authority also said it would continue consultations with relevant stakeholders and communicate the confirmed dates once they have been finalised.

The proposed closure comes at a crucial time as preparations for increased festive-season travel begin, making the planned runway rehabilitation an important step towards improving airport safety and infrastructure.

Passengers are therefore advised to monitor official announcements and confirm their flight arrangements with their airlines before travelling.
