NAFDAC Uncovers Fake Drinks Factory in Lagos, Two Arrested

Written by Mary Bassey

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal drinks production operation in Lagos State, raising concerns over the safety of beverages being sold to unsuspecting consumers.

The operation follows reports of fake and adulterated drinks being produced under unhygienic conditions and distributed to markets.

In a related incident in September 2026, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos State Command, uncovered an illegal fruit juice factory in the Badagry area of Lagos and arrested two female suspects.

The facility was allegedly involved in the production of adulterated fruit juice branded as Barkas Juice.

According to reports, preliminary investigations indicated that the drinks were produced using water, synthetic flavourings, industrial sweeteners, artificial colourants and other additives, with no real fruit content.

The products were reportedly manufactured in an unhygienic environment and distributed to markets in Lagos, Benin City and other parts of the country.

Items recovered during the operation included cartons of the juice, production equipment, chemicals, drums and a truck. Authorities also raised concerns about the NAFDAC registration number allegedly displayed on the products.

The two suspects, aged 48 and 50, were arrested in connection with the operation. The NSCDC later handed them over to NAFDAC for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The development has renewed concerns about the circulation of counterfeit and substandard beverages in Nigerian markets.

Consumers are advised to purchase drinks from reputable sellers, check product labels and registration details, and avoid beverages with suspicious packaging or questionable sources.

NAFDAC and other relevant authorities continue to urge members of the public to report suspected fake or unsafe products to the appropriate agencies.
