Senate President Godswill Akpabio has received strong expressions of support from fellow lawmakers seeking his return as the presiding officer of the 11th National Assembly in 2027.
The support was expressed during Thursday’s plenary when Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Senator Cyril Fasuyi declared that there was “no vacancy” in the office of the Senate President.
Monguno, who represents Borno North Senatorial District, expressed confidence that many of the current senators would return after the 2027 general elections.
He maintained that the Senate presidency should remain with Akpabio, extending his position to other principal officers of the Senate.
Fasuyi, who represents Ekiti North Senatorial District, also backed the position, describing Akpabio as the preferred occupant of the Senate presidency in the next legislative assembly.
Following the declarations, Akpabio asked senators to indicate their support for the position. The lawmakers responded in favour, while no opposing voices were heard when he called for objections.
The development signals growing support for Akpabio’s second-term ambition as political discussions over the leadership of the next National Assembly gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the current expressions of support do not automatically guarantee his return, as the leadership of the 11th National Assembly will be determined through the formal process after the next set of lawmakers is inaugurated.
