Oyo Businesses May Soon Get Relief as Five Mini-Grids Take Shape

Written by Mary Bassey

Small businesses in Oyo State could soon experience improved electricity supply as construction begins on five mini-grids expected to provide a combined 17.7 megawatts (MW) of power.

The projects, planned across five local government areas (LGAs), are expected to include battery storage systems to help improve electricity availability.

For many traders, shop owners and small business operators, unreliable power supply often means spending a large part of their income on petrol or diesel to keep generators running.

If completed as planned, the mini-grids could help reduce dependence on generators, extend business operating hours and lower electricity-related expenses for some businesses and households in the benefiting communities.

Battery storage could also help make electricity available when the mini-grids are not actively generating power, depending on the systems’ capacity and operating arrangements.

The initiative is expected to support local economic activities by improving access to electricity for businesses that depend on reliable power to operate efficiently.

However, the actual benefits will depend on the completion of the projects, the communities connected, electricity tariffs and the reliability of the systems.

Further details on the specific locations, project timelines and expected commissioning dates would help clarify when residents and business owners can begin benefiting from the initiative.
