Pope Leo XIV Leaves Hospital Four Days After Lung Cancer Surgery

Written by Mary Bassey

Pope Leo XIV has been discharged from hospital in Rome, Italy, four days after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung following a diagnosis of lung cancer.

The 70-year-old pontiff was treated at Agostino Gemelli Hospital, where doctors performed the operation on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The surgery was successful, with no complications reported.

According to the Vatican, the Pope was cleared to leave the hospital on Saturday, October 17, after doctors assessed his condition, including blood test results and a chest X-ray.

The procedure confirmed that he had pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common type of lung cancer. However, further medical assessments are expected to determine whether the cancer has spread and whether additional treatment will be necessary.

Following his discharge, Pope Leo returned to the Vatican to continue his recovery.

Despite his recent health challenge, the pontiff is expected to lead the traditional Angelus prayer from the window of his apartment on Sunday, October 18.

The Vatican has not yet disclosed further details about his long-term treatment plan.

His discharge comes earlier than the initial expectation of a longer hospital stay, offering some relief to Catholics and others who have been following updates on his health.
