FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has suspended Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, national team director Ibrahim Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following their criticism of match officials after Egypt’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), Hossam Hassan and Ibrahim Hassan have each received a three-match suspension, while Zico has been handed a five-match ban.
The sanctions followed Egypt’s dramatic 3–2 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 after the North African side surrendered a two-goal lead.
The match sparked controversy among Egyptian players and officials over several refereeing decisions, including a disallowed goal by Zico and a late penalty appeal that was rejected.
Following the defeat, Hossam Hassan openly criticised the officiating, expressing dissatisfaction with decisions he believed had disadvantaged his team. Zico was also sanctioned over comments directed at the referee during a post-match interview.
The Egyptian Football Association has confirmed that it requested detailed explanations from FIFA regarding the disciplinary decisions. The association said it would examine the grounds for the sanctions before deciding whether to pursue an appeal.
The suspensions could affect Egypt’s preparations for upcoming international fixtures, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
The decision has added another chapter to the controversy surrounding Egypt’s World Cup exit, with the country’s football authorities now considering their next steps.
