A High Court in Imo State has ordered the speedy trial of five persons accused of kidnapping 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Independence Day.
The order, issued on Thursday, is expected to facilitate the hearing of the case involving the alleged abduction of the prospective corps members, an incident that raised concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling for national service.
The five defendants are facing allegations connected to the kidnapping, although the charges against them remain subject to determination by the court.
The court’s directive underscores the need for the case to proceed without unnecessary delays as the judicial process continues.
Kidnapping remains a major security concern in Nigeria, particularly for travellers and young people moving between states for education, employment and national service.
Further details about the court proceedings, the identities of the defendants and the specific charges against them were not immediately available.
The defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they are proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The report can be strengthened with confirmed details: the prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when they were abducted along the Owerri–Mgbidi–Onitsha Expressway on October 1.
They were rescued on October 7 after seven days in captivity. Three of the five defendants are linked to this incident, while the other two face allegations involving four additional victims.
