Louis van Gaal Slams UEFA Over New Champions League Format, Accuses Them of Prioritising Money

Former Manchester United and Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal has launched a strong attack on UEFA over the new Champions League format, accusing European football’s governing body of prioritising financial gains over the quality of the competition.

Van Gaal expressed his dissatisfaction with the expanded Champions League structure, arguing that the competition has moved away from its original purpose of bringing Europe’s best teams together.

“It’s ridiculous that UEFA came up with this competition format. Nowadays, anyone can participate. UEFA only thinks about making money. It’s a corrupt world,” Van Gaal said.

The Dutch tactician also questioned whether the current format truly reflects what the Champions League is supposed to represent.

According to Van Gaal, the competition should feature only the strongest teams in Europe, creating more competitive and higher-quality encounters.

“It’s called the Champions League, isn’t it? The best teams should be playing in it. There would be fewer differences in quality and fewer goals, but the matches would be of a much higher standard and the football would be much better,” he added.

His comments have reignited the debate surrounding UEFA’s decision to expand the competition, with questions continuing over whether the new format improves European football or simply creates more commercial opportunities.
