The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to increase funding for public tertiary institutions and address planned tuition fee increases that could make higher education more difficult for Nigerian students to afford.
The lawmakers urged the government to provide adequate financial support to universities and other public tertiary institutions to reduce the pressure to increase fees paid by students.
They also called on the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to engage relevant institutions in reviewing their fee structures to reflect current economic realities and protect students’ access to education.
The House warned that rising tuition fees could prevent students from low-income families from pursuing higher education, potentially widening the gap between those who can afford university education and those who cannot.
It stressed the need for a balance between the financial sustainability of public institutions and the responsibility to make education accessible to Nigerians, especially amid the rising cost of living.
The lawmakers’ appeal comes amid continuing concerns over the affordability of higher education in Nigeria, as universities face increasing operational costs and students struggle with the cost of tuition, accommodation, transportation and other academic expenses.
