A remarkable moment of mutual respect and admiration unfolded in Calabar, Cross River State, on the wings of preparations for the presidential rally at the UJ Esuene Stadium Calabar, as the incumbent Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hon. Hannatu Musa Musawa, met her predecessor, High Chief Edem Duke, during a presidential campaign event ahead of the 2027 general election.

The encounter brought together two individuals who have served in the same ministerial office at different times, with Musawa expressing admiration for Duke’s contributions and initiatives which she indicate were far ahead of his time.

The meeting began with a warm exchange as Hon. Hannatu Musawa greeted the former minister.
“Hello, my predecessor,” Musawa said.
In response, High Chief Edem Duke welcomed her, saying, “Your Excellency, Honourable Minister, welcome to Calabar!”

The incumbent minister expressed her long-standing desire to meet Duke, noting that she hoped to learn from his experience and contributions to the ministry.

“I’ve been wondering how to meet you. I must come and see you to learn a few things. I would like to interview you,” Musawa said.

Duke responded warmly, suggesting that their proposed engagement should be more of a meeting than an interview.
“Oh no, Honourable Minister, more like a meeting,” he replied.

Continuing the conversation, Musawa disclosed that she often reflects on Duke’s work and initiatives, revealing that his photograph is displayed in her office.

“Sir, at times I sit and look at your picture in my office. Some of your initiatives were ahead of their time. If they had been followed diligently, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But there have been gaps over time,” she said.

Her remarks highlighted her recognition of Duke’s contributions to the development of Nigeria’s cultural and tourism sector during his time in office.

In his response, High Chief Edem Duke expressed delight at meeting Musawa and welcomed the opportunity to engage with her.

“Honourable Minister, I’ll be delighted to meet up with you. I’ve been following your good works in the ministry, and it’s nice to see you in Calabar,” he said.

The exchange reflected a spirit of cordiality, professional respect, and appreciation for institutional experience, as both ministers acknowledged each other’s contributions to Nigeria’s cultural and tourism development.
