The Management of the University of Calabar have approved the suspension of four(4) students for assaulting a 100-level female student of the Institution in the last matriculation ceremony of the Institution.

The decision which was conveyed by the Registrar of the Institution, Mr. Gabriel Egbe has it that four students were identified in the recent viral video assaulting a female student in what they called \”water ritual\” have been found culpable.

According to the release, the management of the institution deliberated extensively on the report from the Committee on Gender-Based Violence and have accordingly directed that the affected students: Stephen Howard Usen(Year 4, Department of Accounting), Aniefiok Precious Idorenyin(Year 2, Department of Computer Science), Miracle Ayomide Adeyemi(Year 2, Department of Political Science), and Blessing Queen(Year 4, Department of Genetics and Biotechnology) should proceed immediately on suspension with effect from the 2020/2021 academic session.

It could be recalled that in December 2022, a video of a young female student identified to be a student of the University of Calabar surfaced on social media having fellow students pouring substance suspected be water on her. The already-drenched lady was conspicuously seen as her skirt went off her waist leaving only her underwear. The video which attracted criticism from many media users drew the attention of the Management of the Institution.

As maintained by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Banku Obi, to sustain your studentship on campus, every student must be a worthy ambassador of the Institution. By this, a student must be worthy in character and in learning. Prof. Obi who has shown firmed commitment to this have directed students to shun any act of hooliganism and barbarism that may rob the University of its hard earned reputation.
