….seeks for cooperation in supporting humanitarian crisis in Cross River State

Following the suffering of the displaced people of Belegete community in Cross River who were ravaged by the Cameroonian Ambazonian attack, Dr Helen Isamoh -Egodo, Cross River Hon. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has met with Mr A. Enitan, Permanent Secretary and Mr Charles Anero, Deputy Director, Humanitarian Affairs of the Federal Ministry Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Abuja.

The meeting discussed measures to cooperate in providing palliatives to the victims as a top priority, while highlighting the need for in-depth cooperation and collaboration not only between the state and ministry but also with the international community to substantially improve humanitarian and poverty Alleviation in the state.

The Permanent Secretary recognizing the contribution of His Excellency, Gov. Bassey Otu’s unquenching desire to assess the Federal Government mechanisms and processes in addressing and strengthening humanitarian activities in the state with a view to identify best practices that can be promoted, or possible gaps in the implementation in line with best practices pledged his 0commitment  in raising awareness and expressed hopes to strengthen cooperation with the state in various areas including capacity building, humanitarian research and information sharing.

Dr Egodo stated that a two-sided approach of accountability engagement regarding humanitarian issues is important to ensure that Cross River does not become isolated, and said that she looks forward to cooperating more closely with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs serves as the nexus to bridge Nigeria’s comprehensive and multi-sectoral efforts to ensure inclusive social development, disaster mitigation and coordinated humanitarian responses in Nigeria.

Recall, rebel fighters from Cameroon invaded Belegete, a community in the Obanliku area of Nigeria’s Cross River, and attacked it for over 24 hours. Over a thousand people have now become displaced, while many are either injured or missing.
