Abducted NYSC Corps Members Reportedly Assaulted as Kidnappers Slash Ransom

Written by Mary Bassey

The 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) abducted by gunmen in Imo State have reportedly been subjected to physical abuse while in captivity, raising fresh concerns over their safety.

The victims, including female prospective corps members, were allegedly assaulted by their captors, who have reportedly reduced their ransom demand to ₦5 million per victim.

The development comes amid growing anxiety among the victims’ families, who are appealing for urgent intervention to secure the release of their loved ones.

The kidnappers’ reported decision to lower the ransom has offered a possible opening for negotiations, but the alleged mistreatment of the abductees has heightened fears about their condition.

The incident has also renewed concerns over the safety of young Nigerians travelling for NYSC-related activities, particularly in areas affected by insecurity.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation of the victims’ release or a detailed statement from security agencies regarding the latest developments.

The families of the abducted prospective corps members are hoping for swift action to bring them home safely.
