The Federal Government has announced a new completion target for the remaining sections of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway, with the project now expected to be completed by November.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday, saying the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of the strategic highway had risen to an estimated N752 billion.
According to the minister, more than 80 per cent of the cost of the two major sections being executed by the present administration has already been paid.
Umahi said the Federal Government was also installing solar-powered streetlights along parts of the highway as part of measures to improve safety and visibility for motorists.
He further disclosed plans to deploy what he described as “superhighway guards” to protect the road infrastructure from vandalism.
The minister raised concern over attempts by some individuals to remove portions of the newly constructed concrete pavement, warning that such activities could undermine the huge investment in the project.
The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano highway is a major transport corridor linking the Federal Capital Territory with several commercial centres across northern Nigeria. Its completion is expected to improve movement of people and goods while reducing travel difficulties along the route.
Umahi spoke while receiving recognition as Patron of the National Association of Nigerian Students during a visit by the association’s leadership to the Ministry of Works headquarters in Abuja.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to completing major road projects across the country while ensuring that critical infrastructure is adequately protected after construction.
