APC Chieftain Reacts to First Lady Small Business Comments

Written by Mary Bassey

An APC chieftain, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has defended the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, following criticism over her recent advice encouraging Nigerians to venture into small-scale businesses.

Mumuni said the First Lady’s remarks had been widely misunderstood, explaining that her message was intended to encourage self-reliance and economic empowerment, particularly among women, youths, and low-income earners.

According to him, the First Lady was not dismissing the country’s economic difficulties or suggesting that entrepreneurship is the only solution to unemployment. Instead, he said her comments were meant to inspire Nigerians to take advantage of available opportunities, acquire useful skills, and create sustainable sources of income.

He stressed that small businesses have continued to play a significant role in boosting economic growth, creating jobs, and supporting families across the country. He added that many thriving enterprises began as modest ventures before growing into successful businesses.

The APC chieftain also urged Nigerians to view the First Lady’s comments within their proper context rather than misinterpreting them. He maintained that promoting entrepreneurship is a practical way to encourage financial independence while complementing ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s economy.

He further called for greater support for programmes that promote entrepreneurship, skills acquisition, and small business development, saying such initiatives can help improve livelihoods and reduce unemployment.
