APC Chieftain Reacts to Proposed US Aid Cut, Sends Strong Message to Nigeria

Written by Mary Bassey

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former House of Representatives candidate, Ayoola Lawal, has urged Nigeria to see the proposed suspension of United States assistance as an opportunity to strengthen its economy and institutions rather than depend on foreign aid.

In a statement issued on Friday, Lawal said the proposal by members of the U.S. House of Representatives should serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria to accelerate efforts toward self-reliance through sound governance, economic reforms, and prudent management of public resources.

According to him, while foreign assistance has supported several sectors, including healthcare, education, security and humanitarian services, Nigeria must begin to build systems that can thrive without relying heavily on external funding.

Lawal stressed that the country possesses abundant human and natural resources capable of driving sustainable development if properly harnessed. He called on governments at all levels to prioritise transparency, accountability and policies that encourage investment, industrial growth and job creation.

He also urged leaders to improve revenue generation, strengthen local industries and promote innovation, noting that reducing dependence on foreign aid would enhance Nigeria’s economic resilience and national sovereignty.

The APC chieftain added that the possibility of reduced international assistance should motivate policymakers to implement long-term strategies that will improve public service delivery and ensure critical sectors remain adequately funded through domestic resources.

Lawal maintained that Nigeria’s future prosperity depends on its ability to build a resilient economy driven by effective leadership, responsible fiscal management and sustainable development rather than continuous reliance on external support.
