The United States and Iran exchanged fresh drone and missile strikes on Friday, marking one of the most serious escalations in their renewed conflict and raising fears of a wider regional war.
Iran said it had launched retaliatory attacks against American military assets across the Middle East after accusing U.S. forces of carrying out overnight strikes on key civilian infrastructure inside the country. According to Iranian officials, the attacks hit an airport, a railway station, and several bridges, leaving multiple casualties and causing significant damage.
The latest violence comes barely a month after both countries agreed to a memorandum of understanding intended to reduce hostilities. However, the agreement appears to have collapsed as both sides intensify military operations.
Iranian state media reported that at least eight people were killed and about 20 others injured in the U.S. strikes, while Tehran vowed to continue responding to what it described as attacks on civilian facilities. The United States has not immediately commented on Iran’s allegations regarding the civilian targets.
The renewed exchange of attacks has heightened concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil shipping route, with analysts warning that continued fighting could disrupt energy supplies and further destabilize the Middle East.
