The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has assured Nigerians that troops are making steady progress in efforts to rescue the 39 pupils and seven teachers abducted by suspected gunmen in Oyo State.

Shaibu gave the assurance on Saturday during an interactive session with media executives in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as part of activities marking the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration.

According to the Army Chief, security forces have intensified coordinated search-and-rescue operations, with troops working closely with other security agencies and local intelligence networks to secure the safe release of the victims.

He reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting lives and property, stressing that every available resource is being deployed to ensure the abducted pupils and teachers are rescued unharmed.

Shaibu also urged Nigerians to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely intelligence that could aid ongoing operations. He noted that public cooperation remains vital in addressing insecurity across the country.

The Army Chief reiterated that the military remains resolute in its fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, adding that troops would not relent until those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
