Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his claim that opposition politicians created the hunger and poverty confronting Nigerians.
Atiku described the President’s remarks as “delusion or a staggering case of political amnesia,” insisting that the Federal Government must take responsibility for the country’s economic challenges.
Tinubu had made the comments on Saturday, October 24, 2026, during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State, where he defended his administration’s efforts to address poverty and hunger ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Reacting in a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council, Atiku argued that Nigerians were more concerned about the government’s performance than attempts to blame political opponents.
He noted that the APC had governed Nigeria at the federal level since 2015 and challenged Tinubu to explain what his administration had done to ease the hardship faced by citizens.
Atiku also questioned the impact of the removal of the petrol subsidy and the depreciation of the naira, arguing that the policies had contributed to the rising cost of living.
The former Vice President further raised concerns about poverty, public spending and insecurity, calling on the government to provide answers to Nigerians.
He also criticised the President’s decision to commission the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway from a stadium, alleging that the ceremony did not establish that the road project had been completed.
Atiku maintained that the 2027 presidential election would give Nigerians an opportunity to assess Tinubu’s record, insisting that voters would judge the administration by their daily experiences rather than campaign promises.
The exchange adds to the growing political confrontation between the ruling APC and opposition parties as preparations for the 2027 general election gather momentum.
Tinubu has defended his administration’s economic reforms, promising improved prosperity, growth and opportunities if re-elected.
