BASSEY AKIBA MESSAGE TO MARK THE 2025 WORLD CANCER DAY

Dear Constituents,

On this 2025 World Cancer Day, I stand in solidarity with millions around the globe who are affected by cancer. This day serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by individuals, families, and communities affected by this disease.

Cancer knows no boundaries—it affects everyone, regardless of age, gender, or nationality. As we observe this day, let us honour the courage of survivors and remember those we have lost. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to fighting this disease through education, early detection, and robust healthcare policies.

This year’s theme, “United by Unique”, places people at the centre of care and their stories at the heart of the conversation. Every experience with cancer is unique and it will take all of us, united, to create a world where we look beyond the disease and see the person before the patient.

Cancer is more than just a medical diagnosis – it is a deeply personal matter. Behind every diagnosis lies a unique human story – stories of grief, pain, healing, resilience, love and more. That’s why a people-centred approach to cancer care that fully integrates each individual’s unique needs, with compassion and empathy, leads to the best health outcomes.

We must prioritize access to preventive care, treatment options, and support for all those affected by cancer. Let us advocate for initiatives that promote research and innovation in cancer care, ensuring that every patient receives the best possible treatment.

Together, we can rewrite the future of cancer care – one where the needs of people and communities come first. We can break the stigma surrounding cancer, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage regular screenings.
