Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has sworn in 68 legal practitioners as Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) at the ceremony marking the 2026/2027 Legal Year.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday, October 12, 2026, marking a significant moment for the newly elevated lawyers and the Nigerian legal profession.

The development was reported on Monday, with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) sharing a news flash and images from the ceremony on its official social media platform.

The 68 recipients were approved for elevation by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) during its 174th plenary session held on July 23, 2026, under the chairmanship of Justice Kekere-Ekun.

According to reports, the successful candidates comprise 67 legal practitioners in the advocacy category and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Obiareri.

Among those elevated are former Nigerian Bar Association spokesperson Habeeb Lawal and former NBA Lagos chairman Alex Mouka.

The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is one of the highest professional distinctions in the country’s legal profession. It is awarded to lawyers who demonstrate exceptional professional competence and distinction in courtroom advocacy or legal scholarship.

The recipients were also required to participate in a pre-swearing-in induction programme as part of the process leading to the formal conferment of the rank.

Further details about the ceremony and the newly sworn-in SANs are expected to emerge.
