The Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of 10 individuals for offences bordering on the mutilation and abuse of the Nigerian currency.
The convictions were secured on Friday, July 3, 2026, before Justice F. A. Olubanjo of the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State.
The convicts were prosecuted on separate one-count charges relating to the spraying, stepping on, and other forms of abuse of the naira during social events, contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act.
They all pleaded guilty to the charges when they were read to them. Following their guilty pleas, prosecution counsel urged the court to convict and sentence them accordingly, while the defence pleaded for leniency.
Justice Olubanjo found the defendants guilty and convicted them in accordance with the law. The court also imposed various penalties on the convicts, reaffirming that the abuse and mutilation of the naira remain criminal offences punishable under Nigerian law.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to enforcing laws protecting the integrity of the nation’s currency and warned members of the public to desist from spraying, defacing, mutilating or otherwise abusing the naira during celebrations and other social events.
