The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old suspected member of a local vigilante group, Ushie Joseph, in connection with an alleged armed robbery and shooting incident in Effraya Village, Etung Local Government Area.
The Command also recovered a locally fabricated pistol suspected to have been used in the incident.
Victim Allegedly Shot, Robbed of $5,000 in Etung
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident was reported at about 1:45 a.m. on September 17, 2026, after the alleged attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. on September 16.
The victim, identified as Amachi Victor, 36, of Effraya Village, reportedly sustained a gunshot injury during the incident.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect allegedly attacked and shot the victim with a locally fabricated pistol.
The injured victim was immediately taken to a hospital in Ikom, where he is receiving medical attention and responding to treatment.
Police detectives have visited both the reported scene of the incident and the hospital as part of the ongoing investigation.
The victim also alleged that he was robbed of US$5,000 during the incident.
The police stressed that the allegation remains subject to investigation and will be established through evidence and due legal process.
Suspect Tracked to Hideout
Following intelligence-led efforts, police operatives reportedly tracked Ushie Joseph to his hideout, where he was arrested.
A locally fabricated pistol suspected to have been used during the incident was also recovered and secured as an exhibit.
The Command said further investigative procedures are being undertaken to establish the connection between the recovered firearm and the alleged offence.
Police Promise Thorough Investigation
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, psc, mnips, mspsp, has directed the investigating team to conduct a thorough and professional investigation.
He also ordered that all relevant evidence be properly documented and that the suspect be subjected to due process in accordance with the law.
The Command assured members of the public that further developments would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
