On January 16, 2025, a diverse group of Cross Riverians, both young and old, gathered at the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) office to protest the poor state of electricity in the region. Led by the Special Adviser on Power, Engr. Emmanuel Eneji Nkpeh, the protesters barricaded the office gate and carried placards with inscriptions summarizing their demands.
To maintain order, the Special Adviser Emmanuel Eneji Nkpeh, sought the support of security personnel, whose presence ensured a peaceful demonstration.
After hours of engagement, including a two-hour meeting between PHEDC officials and government representatives, PHEDC agreed to a 12-point demand presented by the people. The agreement marks a significant step toward addressing the electricity challenges faced by residents of Cross River State. The outcome of the peaceful protest was met with applause from passers-by who witnessed the resolve and unity displayed.
Despite the successful negotiations, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has made incendiary remarks on air, criticizing the efforts of Engr. Nkpeh and his team. These comments have drawn backlash, as many believe the NYCN should focus on supporting initiatives aimed at improving electricity supply across the state rather than undermining them.
The protest and resulting agreement highlight the state’s commitment to improving power supply for its residents. Stakeholders have called for collaboration, urging all groups, including the NYCN, to join hands in ensuring the success of this mission.
The goal remains clear: to ensure every corner of Cross River State has access to reliable electricity.
