English Football to Introduce New Goalkeeper Injury ‘Tactical Timeout’ Rule
English football is set to introduce a new rule aimed at reducing time-wasting involving goalkeepers, according to reports from BBC Sport.
Under the new regulation, if a referee allows medical staff onto the pitch to treat a goalkeeper during a match, the goalkeeper’s team will temporarily be forced to play with 10 men.
The goalkeeper’s coach will have just 10 seconds to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for one minute while treatment is being administered. This temporary reduction is designed to discourage teams from using goalkeeper injuries as a tactical delay.
If the coach fails to nominate a player within the allotted 10 seconds, the responsibility will automatically fall to the team captain, who will be sent off the pitch for the one-minute period.
The rule is expected to target situations where goalkeepers go down with seemingly minor injuries to break the rhythm of the game, slow opponents’ momentum, or allow teammates to receive tactical instructions.
Unlike a traditional red card, the player leaving the field under this rule will only serve a one-minute temporary dismissal before being allowed to return to play.
The introduction of the rule marks another step in football’s ongoing efforts to crack down on time-wasting and improve the spectacle for supporters. In recent years, the game has seen several law changes aimed at increasing effective playing time, including stricter enforcement of added time and new regulations surrounding substitutions and player conduct.
If implemented as expected, English football will become one of the first major competitions to adopt this specific measure, adding another unique law designed to promote fair play and keep matches moving at a faster pace.
