The FIFA World Cup has delivered a dramatic opening day as history was made with three red cards shown in a single match for the first time ever in a tournament opener.

The heated encounter saw both teams struggle to maintain discipline, with the match producing more red cards than goals in a remarkable display of tension and intensity.

South Africa received the first two dismissals of the game. S. Sithole was shown a red card in the 49th minute, before T. Zwane followed him off the pitch after receiving another red card in the 84th minute.
