A fire outbreak has affected 12 shops at a shopping complex in the Mandate Market area of Ilorin, Kwara State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday opposite Alkad Filling Station, with the fire reportedly breaking out at about 1:14am.
The shopping complex, which comprises about 40 shops, was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene.
The spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to journalists in Ilorin.
Adekunle said firefighters responded to the emergency and worked to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the shopping complex.
Twelve shops were affected in the incident, while the extent of damage to goods and property is yet to be fully established.
The cause of the fire had not been officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
The incident has again raised concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in busy commercial areas, where closely packed shops can allow flames to spread rapidly.
