The management of Abia State University, Uturu, has lifted the suspension of a professor in its Department of Economics, Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, following a plea by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ABSU chapter.
The decision was contained in a letter dated September 3, 2026, and signed by the Acting Registrar of the university, Dr Joy Nwankwo.
The letter, titled “Lifting of Suspension,” stated that the suspension was being lifted with immediate effect following a written plea from ASUU-ABSU.
“Following a written plea from ASUU-ABSU, the University Management hereby lifts your suspension effective immediately,” the letter stated.
Nwaeze was suspended by the university in August after comments attributed to him on social media concerning the welfare and remuneration of lecturers at the institution. The university had said the posts were inimical to its interests and uncomplimentary to the Visitor of the university. It subsequently constituted an investigative panel to examine the matter.
The suspension became a major point of contention between the university management and ASUU-ABSU, with the union insisting that Nwaeze should be recalled.
ASUU-ABSU had earlier suspended its industrial action and given the university management until September 4 to lift the professor’s suspension, warning that failure to do so could lead to a resumption of the strike.
The lifting of the suspension came a day before the deadline issued by the union.
