Written by Mary Bassey

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to sign the death warrants of four convicted kidnappers if they fail to appeal their sentences within the stipulated 30 days.

The governor made the declaration on Friday while speaking at God’s People Worldwide Prayer Ministry in Ekpoma, Edo State, where he discussed his administration’s efforts to tackle kidnapping, cultism and other criminal activities.

According to reports, the four men were sentenced to death by an Edo State Special Criminal Court on September 29, 2026, over the abduction of a woman at the Vegetable Market along Airport Road in Benin City.

Okpebholo expressed hope that the convicts would not appeal the judgment, adding that he was prepared to sign their death warrants if they failed to challenge the sentences within the required period.

The governor said insecurity was one of the major challenges he faced upon assuming office, explaining that his administration had prioritised efforts to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

He also recounted how he contacted the Commissioner of Police following the kidnapping incident and demanded the swift arrest of those responsible. According to him, the suspects were apprehended within 24 hours.

The governor further disclosed that he had met with prominent traditional rulers across Edo State before commencing his campaign against kidnapping and cultism, warning them against intervening on behalf of anyone involved in criminal activities.

Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s determination to strengthen security and ensure that those found guilty of serious crimes face the consequences prescribed by law.

His latest declaration has drawn attention to the fate of the four convicts and the next steps in the legal process, particularly whether they will appeal their death sentences within the stipulated period.
