Five Years After Kabul Takeover, Taliban Marks Milestone With Military Show

The Taliban has marked five years since returning to power in Afghanistan with public celebrations, flag displays and military activities across the country.

The anniversary falls on August 15, commemorating the Taliban’s capture of Kabul in 2021 following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces after two decades of war.

In Kabul, residents rode motorcycles, rickshaws and other vehicles decorated with Taliban flags as supporters gathered to mark what the authorities describe as a historic victory.

Large crowds were also seen around areas close to the former US embassy, with men, boys and some young girls waving the white flags associated with the Taliban government. People took photographs and selfies as celebrations continued in parts of the capital.

Government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid described the anniversary as a significant moment for Afghanistan, saying the day would be remembered in the country’s history.

Military displays have also formed part of the Taliban’s anniversary celebrations in previous years, with the group showcasing vehicles and weapons left behind following the departure of US-led forces.

The celebrations, however, come amid continued international concern over conditions in Afghanistan. The Taliban has maintained strict restrictions on women and girls, including bans affecting secondary and higher education and women’s participation in many areas of public life.

While Taliban authorities point to improved security and other achievements since taking control, critics say Afghanistan continues to face serious economic and humanitarian challenges.

The fifth anniversary has therefore presented two sharply different pictures of the country: celebrations by Taliban supporters on one side and continuing concerns over rights, employment, education and living conditions on the other.
