The Ghanaian government has declined a proposed GH¢20 million donation from MTN Ghana to support citizens affected by recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, said the government appreciated MTN Ghana’s gesture but had decided not to accept the funds because adequate financial provisions had already been made for the evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
The ministry said it became aware of the proposed donation through media reports following an interview granted by MTN Ghana Board Chairman, Dr Ishmael Yamson.
According to the ministry, the offer had previously been discussed with Yamson and MTN Ghana Chief Executive Officer when they met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
“The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer; however, we respectfully decline,” the ministry stated.
It added that the government remained committed to providing humanitarian assistance to every Ghanaian being evacuated from areas affected by the violence.
The ministry also promised to publish a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise after its completion.
It stressed that the welfare of Ghanaians remained a major priority for the administration while assuring international companies operating in Ghana of a favourable business environment, irrespective of their country of origin.
The development comes amid renewed xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa, raising concerns over the safety of Ghanaian nationals and other African migrants.
The Ghanaian government has subsequently commenced an evacuation exercise to assist citizens affected by the violence and facilitate their safe return and reintegration.
