The Delta State Police Command has arrested the Chairman of Emevor Community in Isoko North Local Government Area, Lucky Okeremu, along with two other community leaders over the alleged assault and public flogging of a resident, Godspower Okedi.
The arrests followed an incident that reportedly sparked tension in the community on Wednesday after Okedi was allegedly attacked and publicly humiliated over comments he made in the Emevor community WhatsApp group.
According to reports, Okeremu and members of the community executive allegedly confronted Okedi over the posts, leading to his assault and public flogging in what residents described as a shocking display that triggered widespread outrage.
The incident quickly drew public attention, prompting the intervention of the Delta State Police Command, which arrested the community chairman and two other suspects as investigations commenced.
Police authorities are yet to release a comprehensive statement on the matter, but the suspects are expected to face further questioning as the investigation continues.
The incident has generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the alleged act and calling for justice, while stressing that no individual should be subjected to assault or public humiliation over disagreements expressed on social media.
The police have assured the public that due process will be followed and that anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
