The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has refunded tuition fees to 1,089 students under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme, with payments made across nine batches as the institution continues processing outstanding beneficiaries.
The university disclosed that an additional 2,090 students are awaiting refunds, which will be handled through its newly introduced automated payment portal designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability.
Speaking with journalists in Calabar on Friday, UNICAL’s NELFUND Desk Officer, Dr. Elizabeth Effiwatt, said the university remains committed to ensuring that all eligible students receive their refunds without unnecessary delays.
According to her, the institution has already completed nine batches of manual refunds and is now transitioning to an automated system to speed up the remaining payments.
“The University of Calabar has completed nine batches of manual refunds to 1,089 students. It is wrong for anyone to say UNICAL has not refunded. We are refunding, and the process is ongoing,” she said.
Dr. Effiwatt explained that the automated portal would help streamline the refund process, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and provide a more transparent system for managing NELFUND disbursements.
She assured students whose applications are still pending that the university is working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure all verified beneficiaries receive their refunds as soon as possible.
The NELFUND initiative, introduced by the Federal Government, is aimed at easing the financial burden on students by providing education loans and ensuring that eligible beneficiaries are supported throughout their academic programmes.
