Nollywood actress, Bunmi Nelson, has opened up about a career opportunity involving actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele that she regrets turning down years ago.
Nelson, reflecting on her past experience, admitted that she never imagined Akindele would rise to such a prominent position in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
She advised people against underestimating others, stressing that life has taught her the importance of humility.
“I didn’t see Funke going far. That’s why in life, don’t underestimate anybody. Don’t look down on anyone except you’re admiring their shoelace,” she said.
According to the actress, if she had known how far Akindele would go, she would have taken her invitation more seriously.
“If I knew Funke would go far like this, I would have held her tight because I can’t even see her back now,” she added.
Nelson explained that she met Akindele through a mutual friend, after which Akindele introduced her to Odunfa. At the time, Nelson was already providing houses as filming locations and had interacted with several people in the entertainment industry.
She said Akindele later approached her for a filming location and repeatedly encouraged her to join the industry.
However, Nelson admitted that she did not take Akindele’s calls and invitations seriously, eventually missing what could have been a major career opportunity.
She recalled that the incident occurred around 2006 or 2007, when the Yoruba film industry was not as crowded as it is today.
Nelson said rumours about the industry also contributed to her hesitation, as she had heard stories about newcomers being expected to show excessive respect to senior colleagues.
Looking back, the actress said she now understands that she allowed hearsay to influence her decision.
“That is why you need to humble yourself in life. If there’s anything I’ve learned in life now, it’s humility,” she said.
