Iran has issued a rare public safety advisory explaining how citizens should protect themselves in the event of a possible nuclear explosion, amid renewed tensions involving the United States and Israel.
The guidelines were released in an eight-minute educational video published by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, on October 29, 2026.
The video advises residents to seek shelter in basements or the central parts of strong buildings, away from windows and external walls. Citizens are also instructed to close doors and windows and switch off air conditioners and ventilation systems that draw air from outside.
According to the advisory, people should remain inside their shelters for at least 24 hours following a potential nuclear explosion, while waiting for further instructions from authorities.
The guidelines also explain what people should do if caught outdoors during an explosion. They are advised not to look directly at the bright flash but instead lie close to the ground, take cover behind a solid barrier and protect their heads and faces.
Once the initial blast wave has passed, they should move into the nearest sturdy building rather than remain outside to watch or record the incident.
Iranian authorities further warned about possible radioactive contamination, advising anyone exposed to radioactive dust to carefully remove their outer clothing, seal it in a plastic bag and wash exposed parts of their bodies with soap and water.
Residents were also encouraged to rely on bottled water and packaged food during an emergency.
The advisory comes amid renewed speculation about a possible US strike on Iran’s nuclear-related facilities, particularly the deeply buried Pickaxe Mountain site near Natanz.
US President Donald Trump had previously indicated that Washington could target the site but ruled out using nuclear weapons.
Although Iran has linked the educational material to its annual Passive Defence Week, its release has attracted international attention because of the country’s growing security concerns and tensions with Washington and Tel Aviv.
