JUST IN: Ifeanyi Okowa Seeks Release of Passport from EFCC for Medical Trip Abroad

Written by Mary Bassey

Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has reportedly approached the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to request the release of his international passport, citing the need to travel abroad for urgent medical treatment.

According to reports, Okowa visited the EFCC’s Lagos Directorate 1 office on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, on Monday, where he formally sought the temporary release of the travel document.

Sources familiar with the matter disclosed that the request is connected to the commission’s ongoing investigation into the alleged diversion of N1.3 trillion from the 13 per cent oil derivation funds allocated to Delta State from the Federation Account during Okowa’s tenure as governor between 2015 and 2023.

The former governor has remained under investigation by the anti-graft agency over allegations bordering on financial misconduct and the management of state funds while in office. His international passport is understood to be among the conditions tied to the ongoing probe.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not issued an official statement indicating whether the request has been approved or denied. Okowa has also not publicly commented on the outcome of his visit to the commission’s office.

The development comes as the anti-corruption agency continues investigations into several high-profile public officials over allegations of financial crimes and abuse of office.

More details are expected to emerge as the matter unfolds.
