The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a 45-year-old man, Bello Abubakar, over the alleged attempted killing of a commercial motorcyclist and the theft of his motorcycle in Shanga Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred on August 23, 2026, when 22-year-old Bello Umar, a commercial motorcycle rider from Wasagu Village in Danko/Wasagu LGA, was found with a serious head injury at Tungar Dariya Bush, near Makera Village in Shanga LGA.
According to the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the injured rider was rescued and taken to Koko General Hospital, where he received treatment and was later discharged.
Police investigations reportedly revealed that Abubakar had hired Umar’s motorcycle from Koko Town to Tungar Dariya Bush.
Upon reaching the remote location, the suspect allegedly attacked the rider with a hoe, leaving him unconscious. Police said the suspect then covered the victim with leaves, believing he had died, before allegedly fleeing with the motorcycle towards Yauri Town.
Following investigations, police operatives traced and recovered the stolen motorcycle, which subsequently led to the arrest of the suspect.
The command said Abubakar is cooperating with investigators, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar M. Hadejia, described the alleged attack as a serious assault on human life and livelihood. He also commended the police operatives involved in the investigation and warned criminals against targeting commercial motorcycle operators and other law-abiding residents.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
