Medical doctor and beauty queen Danielle Adewusi has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2026, marking a remarkable moment in Nigerian pageantry as she follows in her mother’s footsteps 35 years after her mother’s own reign.
Adewusi, who represented Lagos State, emerged winner at the grand finale held on Sunday, September 27, at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, defeating 19 other contestants to clinch the coveted national crown.
Her victory secures her the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the 75th Miss Universe Festival, scheduled for November 24, 2026, at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The competition featured several rounds designed to assess contestants’ confidence, intelligence, cultural awareness, stage presence and commitment to social causes.
Adewusi impressed the judges during the final question-and-answer session, where she spoke about using her platform to make a positive impact and promote meaningful change in society.
However, beyond the glamour and excitement surrounding her victory, the new queen’s achievement carries a deeply personal story.
Her mother, Tonia Okogbenin, represented Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in 1991, making Danielle’s crowning a remarkable continuation of her family’s pageantry legacy.
Before the competition, Adewusi had openly spoken about her desire to follow in her mother’s footsteps, describing the journey as one that combined her passion for pageantry with her professional and personal ambitions.
A medical doctor, model and public speaker, Adewusi is also passionate about women’s health advocacy. Through her initiative, Scrub the Stigma, she seeks to promote health education, challenge harmful misconceptions and encourage women to seek appropriate medical care without fear or shame.
With the national crown now secured, Adewusi will begin preparations for the international stage, where she will carry Nigeria’s flag and showcase the country’s culture, talent and beauty to a global audience.
