Mary Colette Ekong, a founding member of She Means Business, has said the African Women in Business Expo in Calabar is designed to empower women with business knowledge, mentorship, funding and access to global opportunities.
Ekong, who oversees the organisation’s activities in Africa, said She Means Business has over 50,000 members across more than 20 countries, with its headquarters in Doha, Qatar.
Speaking ahead of the three-day expo, Ekong explained that she fought to bring the programme to Calabar because she believes women in Cross River should have access to opportunities that are often concentrated in Lagos.
She said the programme will expose local entrepreneurs to new markets, technology, mentorship and practical business strategies.
Over 300 Women Applied
Ekong disclosed that more than 300 women applied for the business support opportunities after an application link was circulated.
She explained that applicants would undergo pitching and screening before beneficiaries are selected. Grants will range from ₦100,000 to ₦500,000, while other participants will benefit through the She Means Business app, accelerator programme, mentorship and other business support.
According to her, the programme covers various sectors, including fashion, technology, beauty, health, agriculture and other businesses.
“I Don’t Believe in Giving People Free Money”
Ekong said the initiative is focused on sustainable empowerment rather than simply giving out cash.
“I don’t even believe in giving people free money. I believe in helping you to be able to fish.”
She said participants will learn how to structure and grow their businesses, access new markets, develop multiple income streams and use technology to reach customers locally and internationally.
The accelerator programme will run for between two and four weeks, providing participants with practical business training and opportunities for further support.
Three-Day Expo
The expo will feature pitching sessions, panel discussions, mentorship and grant awards.
Activities on August 13 and 14 will hold at the Calabar Municipality Hall, while the grand finale is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Dome, Calabar.
The final day will feature 10 speakers, two panel sessions and the presentation of grants to qualified beneficiaries.
Ekong also disclosed that one beneficiary will have the opportunity to attend the Global Women in Business Conference in Doha, Qatar, in October on an all-expenses-paid trip.
She said the initiative is intended to show women that they can build successful businesses from Calabar and connect with customers and opportunities across the world.
Ekong stressed that women in Cross River have the talent and creativity needed to succeed but require the right information, mentorship and platforms to scale.
She expressed appreciation to the Wife of the Governor,Deputy Governor and other partners for supporting the initiative and helping make the Calabar edition possible.
