The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its enforcement of the ban on sachet alcoholic drinks and alcoholic beverages packaged in PET bottles below 200ml in Edo State.
The agency carried out enforcement operations in Benin City on Friday, targeting outlets at Mission Road and New Benin Market, where prohibited alcoholic products were seized.
The exercise is part of NAFDAC’s ongoing nationwide mop-up operation aimed at removing the banned products from circulation. The Federal Government’s prohibition covers the production, importation, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml.
NAFDAC had earlier directed manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers and retailers to surrender remaining stocks of the affected products as enforcement activities intensified across the country.
The agency has said the policy is driven by public health concerns, including efforts to reduce underage drinking and harmful alcohol consumption, particularly among children and young people.
In August, NAFDAC also ordered manufacturers to recall sachet alcoholic drinks and PET-bottled alcoholic products below 200ml, with the recalled products to be destroyed under the agency’s supervision.
The latest operation in Edo comes amid broader efforts by authorities to ensure that prohibited alcoholic products are no longer available in markets and retail outlets.
NAFDAC has warned businesses still dealing in the affected products to comply with the ban or risk regulatory sanctions, including seizure of the products.
