The Nigerian Navy has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation in Anambra State.
The substances were recovered at Atani Community in Ogbaru Local Government Area during intelligence-led operations conducted by personnel of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha.
According to a handover note obtained on Wednesday, the Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, Commander Kabir Yusuf, said the recovery followed a routine patrol by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Amiyi.
Yusuf said the patrol team reportedly sighted a vehicle suspected of conveying Cannabis Sativa and gave chase. The suspect allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled from the scene.
He added that a follow-up operation led security personnel to a warehouse allegedly being used by the suspect to store illicit substances.
A search of the warehouse reportedly resulted in the recovery of 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa.
The Navy subsequently handed over the recovered substances to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit for further investigation and necessary action.
The naval authorities also requested the anti-drug agency to provide the outcome of its investigation after completing its examination of the seized substances.
The operation, according to the Navy, highlights the vigilance and operational readiness of its personnel in tackling the movement of suspected illicit drugs within its area of responsibility.
The NDLEA is expected to conduct further investigations to establish the nature of the substances and determine the appropriate legal action.
