NEMA Warns Against Bush Burning During Harmattan

NEMA Bush Burning

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a stern warning to the public about the dangers of bush burning during the Harmattan season, urging individuals to avoid actions that could lead to property damage and loss of life.

Speaking at a training session for local government officials and volunteers in Edo State, Ojuedene Kenoma, NEMA’s Head of Operations for the Edo Office, emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness at the grassroots level.

The session aimed to enhance community awareness and equip local officials with the necessary skills to manage disaster prevention and response effectively.

Kenoma noted that disasters such as tanker accidents and fire outbreaks can strike at any time and must be met with a well-prepared, knowledgeable response.

“It’s crucial that we cultivate a culture of preparedness and awareness at every level of society,” he said. “This training is a vital step toward empowering communities to act swiftly in the face of emergencies.”

How to Avoid Fire Outbreaks

NEMA’s training initiative is focused on educating local populations about fire risks. Particularly in relation to tanker accidents and bush fires, both of which pose significant threats in Edo State.

The agency hopes that trained officials and volunteers will pass this knowledge down to their communities. To ensure that individuals understand how to prevent and respond to such disasters.

Superintendent Asimu Sumaila, one of the key speakers, highlighted the importance of individual responsibility in fire safety. He pointed out that up to 80% of fire incidents are caused by carelessness and negligence. “Knowing the right fire response methods can make all the difference between life and death,” Sumaila explained. “For example, the solution to an ordinary fire is different from that of a petrol fire.”

He also urged the public to take basic safety measures, such as turning off appliances when leaving the house and being mindful of the dangers of bush burning, especially near residential areas.

The embers from such fires can spread and ignite nearby structures, leading to devastating consequences.

In closing, NEMA reminded citizens that fire safety is a collective responsibility. Through vigilance and awareness, many disasters can be prevented.
