Veteran Nollywood actress, **Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde**, has opened up about the principles that have sustained her marriage to her husband, Captain Matthew Ekeinde, emphasising mutual respect, understanding and the freedom to make individual choices.
The actress, who has been married since 1996, shared her perspective on marriage during a candid conversation with media personality Chude Jideonwo.
According to Omotola, the strength of their relationship lies in their ability to communicate openly, understand each other’s differences and respect one another’s personal space.
She explained that their marriage is built on choice rather than obligation, noting that both partners have individual journeys but have deliberately chosen to share those journeys.
The actress further stressed that being married does not mean losing one’s identity or independence, adding that she and her husband recognise the importance of maintaining their individuality while building a life together.
In her words, “My husband and I are very open and understand each other. We respect each other’s choices and space. I’m with him, not because I love him all the time, but because I chose to be with him.”
Omotola’s remarks offer a candid perspective on long-term relationships, highlighting the importance of commitment, communication and conscious effort beyond romantic feelings.
Her marriage to Captain Matthew Ekeinde, with whom she shares four children, remains a significant part of her personal life, which she has occasionally discussed in interviews.
The actress’s reflections have also drawn attention to the idea that lasting relationships require more than affection, but also friendship, understanding and the willingness of two people to continually choose each other.
