The Rivers State Police Command has taken action against three officers linked to the death of 22-year-old University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt.
Obodo was shot dead on August 27, 2026, at the Agip-Ada George Junction in Port Harcourt, an incident that sparked protests and renewed calls for justice from youths, residents and members of his family.
According to witnesses and the deceased’s relatives, police officers allegedly flagged down Obodo’s vehicle and opened fire after pursuing him for failing to stop immediately.
The police, however, gave a different account, saying a scuffle and altercation occurred before the fatal shot was fired. Two passers-by were also reportedly injured during the incident.
Following an investigation, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, announced on Wednesday that three officers had been found culpable and dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
“The officers being paraded today have been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and will be charged to court,” Adepoju said.
The Commissioner added that the dismissed officers would face criminal prosecution over their alleged involvement in the incident.
Meanwhile, an Inspector who allegedly fled the scene after the shooting has been declared a deserter by the command. Further action is expected against the officer.
The incident triggered demonstrations in parts of Port Harcourt, with protesters blocking Agip Road and sections of the East-West Road around Ada George.
Obodo’s family and protesters have continued to demand a transparent investigation and the swift prosecution of those found responsible.
The police command has yet to disclose the specific charges against the dismissed officers or announce when they will be arraigned.
