The journalism community in Akwa Ibom and Cross River states has been thrown into mourning following the death of Patrick Odey, a correspondent with The PUNCH.
Odey, aged 63, died in the early hours of Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
His son, Benedict Odey, confirmed the death during a telephone interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday.
According to him, the late journalist’s remains have been deposited at a morgue in his hometown in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State.
Odey was an experienced journalist who covered major developments in Akwa Ibom for The PUNCH. The newspaper’s author profile shows that he had continued reporting on issues across the state shortly before his death, with his latest published reports appearing in August 2026.
He had also worked with other Nigerian newspapers, including Daily Champion and Daily Trust, before joining The PUNCH. His professional profile states that he had more than two decades of experience in journalism and held a Bachelor’s degree in English Language from the University of Port Harcourt as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Mass Communication from the Nigeria Institute of Journalism.
A report published following his death identified Odey as a native of Mbube in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River State and a member of the Akwa Ibom Correspondents’ Chapel.
The family has scheduled a night of songs and tributes for Friday, October 2, 2026.
His burial and interment are expected to take place on Saturday, October 3, 2026, in his hometown in Ogoja Local Government Area.
The cause of death had not been publicly disclosed in the reports reviewed as of publication.
