The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to families and next-of-kin of 2,971 deceased police officers.
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, presented cheques to the beneficiaries on Thursday in Abuja as part of efforts to address outstanding entitlements owed to families of officers who died in service.
The total payment amounted to N2,317,177,094, covering beneficiaries under several insurance policy years, including 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025.
According to Disu, the latest disbursement also included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
The police chief said the payment was aimed at ensuring that the families of officers who lost their lives while serving the country receive the benefits due to them.
He stressed the importance of honouring the commitments made to police personnel and their families, particularly those who have made sacrifices in the line of duty.
The development comes as the Nigeria Police Force continues efforts to improve the welfare and support systems available to its personnel and their dependants.
The payment is expected to provide financial relief to the affected families while demonstrating the force’s commitment to settling outstanding insurance obligations to the next-of-kin of deceased officers.
