Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed strong disapproval of recent remarks made by British Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch regarding Nigeria. Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on December 10, 2024, Shettima described Badenoch’s comments as not only unpatriotic but also a misrepresentation of Nigeria’s progress and resilience.
Kemi Badenoch, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, recently made headlines for her critical statements about governance and corruption in the country. She suggested that Nigeria’s systemic issues hinder its potential, remarks that have sparked backlash from Nigerians both at home and abroad.
Addressing the controversy, Shettima stated, “It is unfortunate that someone who has benefited from Nigeria’s values and upbringing would choose to undermine her heritage on such a global platform. Changing her Nigerian name might be a personal decision, but denying the greatness of this nation is unacceptable.”
The Vice President’s comments follow an official rebuke from the Nigerian government, which has accused Badenoch of distancing herself from her roots. The Nigerian Diaspora Commission also noted that attempts to engage with Badenoch for collaborative initiatives have been met with resistance.
Badenoch, currently leading the UK’s opposition Conservative Party, has responded through a spokesperson, clarifying that her remarks were not intended to demean Nigeria but rather to highlight the importance of addressing its challenges. She has also reiterated her focus on UK politics, stating she has limited time for public relations concerning her Nigerian background.
The controversy has ignited debates among Nigerians, with many calling for reconciliation between the nation and its diaspora. Analysts believe this incident highlights the growing divide between diaspora Nigerians and their homeland, urging both sides to seek constructive dialogue to foster mutual respect and collaboration.
