Vice President Kashim Shettima has said Nigerian students must have a voice in national decision-making, stressing that young people should be treated as active stakeholders in the country’s development rather than leaders of tomorrow alone.
Shettima said students deserve to be recognised as part of Nigeria’s present, adding that their views and concerns should be considered when policies affecting their education and welfare are being formulated.
The Vice President made the remarks on Wednesday while receiving a delegation of national student leaders from across the country at the State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He also highlighted the Federal Government’s interventions in the education sector, including the student loan programme and efforts to improve the welfare of academic staff.
According to him, these measures are aimed at helping students remain in school, reducing the financial pressure on their families and ensuring that academic activities are not repeatedly disrupted by industrial strikes.
The student loan programme is designed to provide financial support to eligible students in tertiary institutions, helping to address some of the financial barriers to accessing higher education.
Shettima’s comments underscore the importance of student participation in governance and the need for policies that address the challenges facing young Nigerians.
His meeting with the student leaders also provided an opportunity to discuss issues affecting students and the broader education sector.
