Tacha Reveals What BBNaija Must Do to Win Back Nigerians’ Attention

Written by Mary Bassey

Former Big Brother Naija housemate and media personality Natacha Anita Akide, popularly known as Tacha, has called on the organisers of the reality television show to take a break, rethink their strategy and introduce fresh ideas to attract viewers.

Tacha made the suggestion during an appearance on *Arise 360*, a programme on Arise News, where she discussed the changing entertainment landscape and the growing influence of social media on public attention.

According to the reality star, Nigerians now have several sources of entertainment online, making it more challenging for television programmes to maintain the level of attention they previously enjoyed.

“I think they need to take a break, restrategise and just come up with something,” she said.

Tacha, who rose to prominence during the 2019 ‘Pepper Dem’ edition of Big Brother Naija, explained that trending conversations on social media now compete with reality television for the attention of Nigerians.

She cited ongoing celebrity controversies and online discussions as examples of the kind of content that can easily draw public interest away from television shows.

“You don’t want us watching housemates on the show, meanwhile PSquare is giving us part seven of his family issues and stuff we want to hear,” she added.

The former housemate also noted that social media has changed how people create and consume entertainment. She explained that many people who were previously uncomfortable being filmed now regularly record themselves and share content online.

Tacha suggested that temporarily stepping away from the screens could help the show regain public interest, allowing viewers to miss it before a return with a refreshed format.

“You also give Nigerians a chance to miss you,” she said, comparing the idea to a relationship in which spending time apart can make people appreciate each other more.

She further urged the organisers to develop more creative and engaging concepts that would make future editions more exciting for viewers.

“They need to cook, like they need to try to do something different which will be much more mind-blowing and more interesting to Nigerians because Nigerians are hard to please,” she said.

Her comments come amid wider discussions about the show’s relevance and its ability to maintain its influence in Nigeria’s entertainment industry as audiences increasingly turn to digital platforms for content and celebrity updates.

Music executive Ubi Franklin also called for BBNaija to restrategise in September 2026, arguing that although the show remains a recognised brand, its ability to dominate public conversations has declined.

Tacha’s remarks have added to the conversation about whether Big Brother Naija needs a major change in format, new ideas or a different approach to keep viewers interested in future seasons.
