The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Central Senatorial District primaries held at Havila Hotel in Ikom took a dramatic turn after Navy Commander Solomon Esor formally objected to the participation of Hon. John Ifere in the contest.
What initially appeared to be a smooth and routine consensus exercise quickly became tense following Commander Esor’s public challenge over the eligibility of Hon. Ifere to participate in the primary election.
Addressing party stakeholders and delegates at the venue, Commander Esor argued that Hon. Ifere did not meet the required qualifications to contest alongside him, citing alleged inconsistencies which, according to him, could undermine the credibility and integrity of the primary process.
His objection immediately altered the atmosphere of the exercise, drawing reactions from party faithful, delegates, observers, and stakeholders present at the venue.
The situation further heightened concerns among participants, with many insisting that proceeding with the exercise without resolving the eligibility dispute could compromise the legitimacy of the outcome.
Following the development, several party stakeholders reportedly called on the leadership of the PDP to uphold due process and ensure fairness in the conduct of the primaries.
Some supporters and observers at the venue argued that Commander Solomon Esor should be declared winner of the primary if it is established that he remains the only aspirant considered duly qualified to participate in the contest.
According to them, such a decision would help preserve internal party discipline, protect the integrity of the electoral process, and reflect the true democratic will of party members in the Central Senatorial District.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership had yet to issue an official statement regarding the objection raised during the primaries.
